Breast Augmentation and Fitness Models
The classical Florida lifestyle has always been a magnet for people who hold fitness in high regard. As such, it is no surprise that the Treasure Coast is home to a very large population of professional fitness models. We see a female fitness models in my office at Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery. Since the “cutting phase” prior to a fitness competition is VERY rough on facial skin, models often request improved skin care regiments to help improve their skin tone and complexion. Therefore we commonly perform laser facials and light based skin treatments for our fitness model patients. Such skin preparations, as well as botox and dermal fillers, do not require any plastic surgery, need only minimal downtime, and are one of the professional show secrets that successful models use.
From a surgical standpoint, our most common request is breast augmentation. Our IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness) and NPC (National Physique Committee) fitness models often desire a natural looking breast enhancement. It is terribly unfortunate, but fitness models are often plagued by poor breast augmentation results, and the reality is that these results can and should be avoided by simply understanding the difference between fitness models and non-fitness models when undertaking breast augmentation. There are a number of important differences when a fitness model enters our office as compared to a non-fitness model. Lets examine the differences.
Breast Augmentation Implant Positioning
The first issue regarding fitness models is the increase in muscle mass. While many may think this is not feminine, from a breast augmentation standpoint, the increased muscle mass is to be celebrated and used in a proper fashion. Breast augmentation implants should always be placed underneath the muscle in fitness models. By so doing, you avoid a remarkably poor, un-natural, grapefruit implant appearance in women who invest in their bodies everyday.
Breast Implant Sizes
The second issue regarding fitness models is that the breast implant size must appropriately reflect the increased muscle mass. The easiest way to address this issue is with breast implant profile manipulation rather than just increasing the implant volume. Fitness and bodybuilding models increase muscle mass and decrease body fat through intense, consistent effort and dedication. In the breast area, there is consistent loss of upper pole breast fullness. As well, after dropping below 20% total body fat, the breast starts to full scale deflate. The greatest loss of volume however is in the superior and superior-medial poles of the breast (8:00-12:00 on the clock for the non-anatomic types).
Knowing this, it is almost universal that nearly all female fitness models are interested in replacing what was lost through their physical discipline: superior and superior medial pole fullness!! Because of this simple but thoughtful observation, these patients almost always opt for a high profile or full profile breast augmentation implants. A naturally appearing breast line can be created using these higher profile breast implants while still providing a robust volume to the breast. This can be achieved and still maintain an overall natural shape and size to the breast. Also, when sizing fitness models for breast augmentation implants, it is important to attempt to maximize the breast implant diameter while staying within the limits of the chest wall. The insertion of the pectoralis on the sternum in the midline cannot be removed, otherwise you will end up with a uniboob, aka synmastia. At the same time, though, I need to create the best cleavage possible. I do this by maximizing the diameter of your implant based on your chest wall measurements, and then combine a meticulous medial dissection during surgery with a high or full profile implant to produce more cleavage medially. This creates a very natural medial curve to the breast regardless of whether you go for a smaller or larger sized bust line, and it specifically works well in the fitness model arena.
Saline Breast Implants vs Silicone Breast Augmentation Implants
The third issue regarding fitness models is body fat. If it is less than 15%, ALL SALINE BREAST IMPLANTS WILL RIPPLE. Some will ripple medially, some laterally, some all over. Regardless of where, it will happen. Silicone breast implants offer a profoundly superior appearance and feel in these clients. No exceptions.
