Dermal fillers play a significant role in facial enhancement. Clinical effectiveness, facial aesthetics, and patient satisfaction are critical outcome measures. Successful outcomes can be measured by the chemical and physical attributes of the dermal filler selected. There are many different types of dermal fillers available. The major dermal fillers available described below. Side effects are usually mild to moderate, lasting 7 days or less, and include temporary injection-site reactions such as redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps. Restylane® is a natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. Restylane is sold by Medicis and comes as Restylane and Restylane-L. Restylane® is the most common injected filler used in aesthetic plastic surgery. Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid filler that is very effective in the lower eyelid, upper eyelid, nasolabial folds, cheeks, and lip areas. It is soft, non-nodular, and produces natural, predictable results.
This hyaluronic acid filler is a close cousin to Restylane®. It has a greater thickness (i.e., molecular viscosity), and as such is used in areas of large volume loss. We commonly use this filler in the nasolabial folds and cheek areas.
Juvederm®, made of natural dermal filler, helps to offer a natural look to facial lines and wrinkles and is also the fastest growing injectable in aesthetic plastic surgery. Juvederm® is also a hyaluronic acid filler that works in almost all areas of the face. It provides an outstanding result in the forehead, cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds, and the jawline. The company, Allergan, promotes three variations of Juvderm injectables including Juvderm® XC, Juvederm Ultra® XC, and Juvederm Ultra® XC Plus. Juvederm® XC is the first and only FDA approved Hyaluronic acid dermal filler that can last up to 1 year (results vary) with a single treatment. Juvederm injectable gels are indicated for the mid-to-deep dermis to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and nasolabial folds (laugh lines).
Radiesse volumizing facial filler is based upon calcium microsphere injection. This is our preferred filling agent for large volume corrections in all areas of the face except the upper eyelids and lower eyelids. It lasts longer than the hyaluronic acid fillers, and provides a smooth, even result, especially in deeper wrinkles. Radiesse is more expensive than its hyaluronic acid counterparts, as it lasts well over a year, and can sustain volume in many cases up to two years. Watch Radiesse videos by Dr. Durkin.
