A Quantum Leap Forward in Facelift Surgery

The first facelift surgery was performed in 1916. That original procedure didn’t change much for 60 years. Since then, there have been many procedural and technological advancements, but perhaps none bigger or more significant than the Meso BioMatrix Biological Facelift, a technique created and designed by our founder, world-renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Alan Durkin.

What is Meso BioMatrix Facelift Surgery?

MBFS combines the latest and most effective techniques in “traditional” facelift surgery with an exciting new mesh technology that together achieve reliable and unparalleled results. It is ideal for patients with significant neck descent, or for patients who are undergoing a secondary facelift, or a revision of a previous facelift where the results were not achieved.

How does this work? Why is it an advancement in facelift surgery? Meso BioMatrix Surgical Mesh is an exceptionally thin but especially strong non-human alternative tissue that can be used in a variety of cosmetic or medical plastic surgery procedures, including facelifts. The mesh provides a level of additional support and reinforcement that was previously unavailable to surgeons. This safe and natural “scaffolding” provides additional contour control, can be easily sutured, and has exceptional tensile strength and flexibility. All this from a mesh that is only 0.3mm in thickness!

Before we get deeper into this innovative concept, let’s go back and revisit “Facelift 101.”

What is a facelift?

A facelift (known medically as a rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure designed to decrease signs of aging in your face and neck. A facelift is often very effective in lifting and tightening skin in your mid to lower face. The result is a more vibrant, rested, and attractive facial appearance.

How Does a Facelift Achieve Results?

The basic surgical technique lifts a flap of skin on each side of your face and pulls them back. The tissues below your skin are repositioned, and excess skin is removed, achieving a smoother and more contoured and sculpted look.

Benefits and Advantages of Facelift Surgery

What issues can be addressed?

  • Can boost self-confidence, producing both personal and professional benefits
  • Is especially effective in correcting sagging in the mid to lower face
  • Improves tone of facial skin and underlying muscles
  • Can target multiple signs of aging in one procedure
  • Smooths deep creases between the mouth and nose
  • Can be combined with other cosmetic procedures
  • Produces impressive and durable results
  • Lifts the corners of the mouth
  • Removes excess skin
  • Lifts the cheeks

What Facelift Doesn’t Do

A facelift will not treat sun damage or irregularities in skin color. And remember that facelift is designed primarily to treat the lower two-thirds of your face. The upper third may be better treated by a brow lift, also known as a forehead lift.

Am I a Candidate for a Facelift?

You should be in good overall health without conditions that could elevate surgical risks. Non-smokers are greatly preferred. Because facelifts involve some pulling and tugging, your skin needs to have sufficient elasticity, as determined by your doctor.

What Causes Facial Aging?

  • Skin type
  • Genetics
  • Repetitive facial movements
  • Insufficient hydration
  • Sun exposure levels
  • Poor skin care
  • Gravity
  • Thin skin that results from a loss of collagen and elastin

Are There Different Types of Facelift Surgery?

Mini Facelift: Concentrates on your jowls and upper neck
Full Facelift: This includes mini facelift benefits but also addresses your full neck and mid-face
Deep Plane Facelift: A procedure that surgically manipulates facial musculature and tissue into a more youthful-appearing position

Your Meso BioMatrix Biological Facelift Procedure

While some facelift procedures can be performed using sedation and local anesthesia, general anesthesia is typically selected. The surgery usually takes between two and four hours. Your incisions will be small and inconspicuous, placed discreetly in your hairline and behind your ears.

Following your procedure, you will be taken to a recovery area, and your medical team will continue to monitor your condition. In most cases, you’ll be able to go home as soon as your body clears your anesthesia. But make sure you have arranged for a driver.

Recovery and Aftercare

After a Meso BioMatrix Biological Facelift Vero Beach patients will have some bruising and swelling for up to three weeks, and there could be some temporary drainage at the incision sites. Make sure you have some help at home for at least a few days. Do not pick at your incisions. Avoid vigorous exercise for about three weeks and stay out of the sun during that period.

To maximize the results and safety of your facelift, follow your doctor’s post-surgical hygiene and wound care instructions to a “T.” You should be back to all of your full and normal activities about a month after your facelift.

Results

Just as soon as your bruising and swelling subside, you will see a younger and more vibrant-looking version of your face. Full results are usually achieved after three months.

Is this surgery painful?

Maybe surprisingly, the answer is no. While Dr. Durkin can always prescribe pain medication as appropriate, most facelift patients can manage their post-surgical discomfort with over-the-counter drugs.

Are there risks and side effects?

All surgical procedures come with risks, including infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, complications from anesthesia, and allergic reaction to medications or surgical materials. Risks specific to facelift are hair loss at incision sites and facial nerve injury.

How long will my results last?

Results can last up to 15 years, especially if you maintain a healthy lifestyle, avoid excessive sun exposure, and practice good skin care. But facelift results should not be considered permanent.

Can a facelift be combined with other procedures?

Yes, including neck lift, brow lift, and neuromodulator injections such as Botox®.

Will I have scars?

All incisions produce scars. But Dr. Durkin is a master at making as few and tiny incisions as possible, and placing them in areas that are unnoticeable.

Will my face look stiff or 'frozen'?

No. You will look rested and relaxed but never pulled or stretched.

What are the costs of facelift surgery?

That will vary according to your procedure. Have a full discussion about costs with your doctor prior to your facelift. Remember, because a facelift is considered a cosmetic procedure, your insurance will not cover the costs.
